FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and it is a network protocol used for transferring files between computers. FTP is commonly used with a FTP Client and offers users the ability to update files directly to a server and vice versa.

How to Use FTP

Before we start on the FTP process, we will need an FTP Client to use. We recommend using something like Filezilla. You can get Filezilla from the following link: http://filezilla-project.org/.

  1. Once we have a FTP Client to use, load it up.
  2. We will now have to tell the FTP Client the details for the server we wish to connect to. The following is generally all the details you need to connect to an FTP Server:
    • - Hostname
    • - Username
    • - Password
    • - Port
    • You may also need to select a logon type if you are in FileZilla's Site Manager. Setting it to Normal for most cases should be fine.
  3. FTP Details will look similar to the following:
    • Hostname: ftp.hostname.com
    • Username: hostname OR another username of choice
    • Password: password
    • Port: 21
  4. If everything has been set up correctly, you will see some information show up in the console area along the top. Once connected though, the right hand side window will have a folder structure already made for you.
  5. We should be able to see a folder named www. If we put a index.html or index.php file in this folder, it will be shown when you visit:

Alternatively, you can use our website control panel:

  1. Login to the panel with provided details
  2. Click Other, then File Manager along the left hand side
  3. Click the Upload button along the top and make sure the browser allows the pop-up through
  4. In the pop-up window, use the browse button to find the file you wish to upload
  5. Check whether you need the other options, otherwise leave them on No
  6. Click the upload button to upload your file to the selected directory
