What is shared, virtual or dedicated hosting?

These terms vary greatly from web hosting company to web hosting company.
 

SHARED means that a single identifier protocol address will be shared by many sites, equipment and anything else. These plans also have limited load balancing because each conflicts with the other for line bandwidth. We do not have such a system anywhere in our own datacentre.

VIRTUAL means that whilst your site is given a unique identifier, it is not recognised as independent by any of the global hubs. Instead, inside a persons machine, they allow an open port or switch and allocate a resource locator to that. If you purchase this style of hosting, you are also sharing with many other domains and can not guarantee any levels of priority.
Virtual web hosting is used by some web hosting companies to 'spread' massive bandwith plans across many of their clients, knowing that such a bandwidth will never be reached or used.

DEDICATED means, that you are renting/buying a pre conditioned slave or blade (or similar) server inside a datacentre. It does not mean you have any higher rating than SHARED or VIRTUAL.

STATIC IP means you are assigned, by the hosting company a fully fledged set of Unique Protocol numeric addresses FOR IN WHICH, all the major hubs around the world will associate your domain.

Often, Static Ip's work like this. A website hosting company buys from a datacentre the master IP for many thousand dollars that will be shared by its clients.
Then, they assign under the master ip, the customer domain a 'part number' so that their equipment can output the pages. We do not use that schema.

 

When choosing a plan, you should only decide upon an 'Individual Account Static IP' for your domain.

Every time you use a domain name, you use the Internet's domain name servers (DNS) to translate the human-readable domain name into the machine-readable IP address. How and where the DNS is created and listed is vital.
